Multicultural Therapy Service via Online & Telephone Sessions
What is Multicultural Therapy?
Culturally Sensitive Therapy also known as Multicultural Therapy, involves offering emotional support that's relevant to the client's background. This may differ due to race, ethnicity, disability, age, neurodiversity, religion, beliefs, gender identity, sexuality, socio-economic status or any other part of their identity.
Culturally Sensitive Therapists recognise that background is an important component of who we are. Difference in practice, tradition, history and the struggle of diverse clients is respected in the counselling relationship.
Why is Multicultural Therapy important?
Under-represented and under-served populations may approach counselling and mental health through the lens of their background. Marginalised groups have had a history of being subjected to exclusion, oppression and discrimination. This has caused trauma for many. Culturally Sensitive Therapists take this into account while supporting their clients compassionately.
What Culturally Sensitive Therapists at OCS understand
So much has happened in the world. There have been health, social justice and political issues that have resulted in split opinions. In our field, we have sadly witnessed the increase in physical illness, anxiety, grief and stress in people’s lives.
We understand how current events impact our clients and how historical events have had an effect too. Unfortunately, such factors have caused some people to feel unsafe when approaching mental health services. OCS aims to help change that. We offer you comfort and we welcome you all.During Therapy sessions we cover a variety of problems
. Exploring backgrounds, social groups and family dynamics can also help in the counselling space. There may be parts that we want to detach from, those that we want to be linked to or new ones to adopt. Therapy can help you on that journey of discovery and choice. Other concerns including power and privilege, discrimination, racism as well as political and social dimensions can freely be discussed. You can share anything with your Therapist
Celebrating Diversity
Therapy isn't just about dealing with the hard stuff. Celebrating wins, acknowledging growth and sharing pride are meaningful parts of the therapeutic experience.
There is so much beauty in diversity and inclusion. While there are hardships in multicultural groups, pride should beam under the spotlight too. Diverse groups are unique and have so much to be proud of and known for, aside from their struggle.
We remember that being multicultural may have come with negative treatment too many times, but this does not make you as a person or a people a negative. OCS celebrates who you are with you.
We offer a safe space for you to bring your whole self and practice vulnerability. You can be comfortable just as you are and feel valued.
African, Caribbean, Black American and Indigenous communities
Ethnic groups make up 12% of the population, while only 4% of Therapists are from those groups. People from ethnic communities are significantly more likely to be diagnosed with mental illness. As the world increases in diversity, the mental health field must continue to adapt to support its population in the best possible way. We believe that everybody deserves to have space to unpack, to be seen and heard.
Therapy for Black, Brown, Asian and Mixed race clients
80% percent of mental health providers are not trained in treating race-based trauma so it can be hard to find help. Incorporating cultural components into the therapeutic relationship is woven throughout OCS's support. You may be isolated or feeling like no one gets you. Perhaps you have been searching for a Therapist from an ethnic background for a long time, this is available. We offer counselling for Black, Brown, Asian and Mixed race clients, as well as people from other ethnic communities.
All of our sessions are conducted via Email, VoIP Skype/WhatsApp calls, Telephone and Instant Messenger
